Dr. Simpson had been our local family doctor since I was ten and knew all about my aversion to being touched, so worked round it by getting me to press on my own abdomen in certain ways to diagnose my problem. "Ow!" I said loudly after pressing down my right side. As I let go quickly as instructed, a searing pain shot through me. "There's no doubt in my mind, Kathy, you have acute appendicitis and need surgery within 24 hours" he said emphatically. I collapsed in tears. "I can't I just can't! No one will be able to get near me!" I wailed. The phobia and horror was so strong I knew I would die rather
